Your route to success
How I got my logo and invented a metaphor for your journey:
One day, when I was little, my brother saw me waking up and decided that I resembled the sea monster from ‘The Kraken Wakes’ by John Wyndham. Since then ‘Kraken’ has been my family nickname-a pun on Karen. So, I wanted to have a logo with me as a sea monster AND an expert English teacher, too! Do you like it? However, I didn’t like the idea of me as a monster. We all know that it is the GCSE examiner who is the monster that we have to feed the right things to, at the right time, so this is how I changed the story to show your journey to success:
Let’s imagine that the GCSE English examiner is a monster. A disgusting creature sitting on the ocean bed gobbling up sailors who dare to cross over her domain.
Do you know what to feed her to get the marks you need and arrive safely at the shore? Can you find the right morsels and titbits to throw overboard for her to devour, which will satisfy her enormous appetite? Have you got the skills which will give you safe passage to the sandy beach, or will you perish in the murky depths of the examiner’s watery world?
I am here to guide your boat. If you join my Expert English crew, with me as the captain, we can safely navigate the treacherous currents above her, and feed her exactly what she wants, so that we can cruise our way together to the cove of success where you will receive an excellent English GCSE grade.
Our journey will lead you to the peaceful, warm waters of the shore, where your future looks enchanting, and you can look back and wave to the contented examiner monster slurping and crunching happily on the seabed.
The metaphor about the sea monster was a story about you and your future. Now let me tell you a story about me and my past.
My Journey
A word from Karen
“I had just started teaching English at a Comprehensive school in East London when the GCSE exam system replaced the O Level. All my students were panicking about what to do and how it would affect them. I investigated the changes and studied how the students could tailor their answers to what the examiner wanted. I learnt how to make it work for them then, and I have worked on adapting each new change to make it work for my students, ever since.“
– Karen Baney

English Literature Modules
(AQA and Edexcel Boards)
EET offers a module-based course for students taking English Literature (AQA and Edexcel Boards). Literature Modules 1-2-3 can be purchased separately inside the member’s area at £39.95 each. Module 4 can be purchased at £59.95.
To complete the GCSE English Literature course, candidates have to study one Shakespeare Play and then choose 3 more texts from 19th Century Novel, Modern Prose or Drama and Poetry Anthology.
EET students will choose one option from each module that they purchase. EET offers modules in the most popular texts chosen by schools.
For students taking the exam in 2021, there is new AQA guidance on the Literature:
The Shakespeare text is still compulsory, but students can now choose to answer questions on only 2 other text options, instead of three, which will take some revision pressure off.
Quotation from AQA guidance below:
‘A minimum common core (play by Shakespeare) that all students will be assessed on. Centre level content choices for students to answer questions on 2 of the 3 remaining content areas: poetry; 19th century novel; fiction/drama from the British Isles from 1914.’
