Your route to success
How I got my logo and invented a metaphor for your journey:
One day, when I was little, my brother saw me waking up and decided that I resembled the sea monster from ‘The Kraken Wakes’ by John Wyndham. Since then ‘Kraken’ has been my family nickname-a pun on Karen. So, I wanted to have a logo with me as a sea monster AND an expert English teacher, too! Do you like it? However, I didn’t like the idea of me as a monster. We all know that it is the GCSE examiner who is the monster that we have to feed the right things to, at the right time, so this is how I changed the story to show your journey to success:
Let’s imagine that the GCSE English examiner is a monster. A disgusting creature sitting on the ocean bed gobbling up sailors who dare to cross over her domain.
Do you know what to feed her to get the marks you need and arrive safely at the shore? Can you find the right morsels and titbits to throw overboard for her to devour, which will satisfy her enormous appetite? Have you got the skills which will give you safe passage to the sandy beach, or will you perish in the murky depths of the examiner’s watery world?Â
I am here to guide your boat. If you join my Expert English crew, with me as the captain, we can safely navigate the treacherous currents above her, and feed her exactly what she wants, so that we can cruise our way together to the cove of success where you will receive an excellent English GCSE grade.
Our journey will lead you to the peaceful, warm waters of the shore, where your future looks enchanting, and you can look back and wave to the contented examiner monster slurping and crunching happily on the seabed.
The metaphor about the sea monster was a story about you and your future. Now let me tell you a story about me and my past.

My Journey
A word from Karen
“I had just started teaching English at a Comprehensive school in East London when the GCSE exam system replaced the O Level. All my students were panicking about what to do and how it would affect them. I investigated the changes and studied how the students could tailor their answers to what the examiner wanted. I learnt how to make it work for them then, and I have worked on adapting each new change to make it work for my students, ever since.“
– Karen Baney

My daughter has missed a lot of school. Can she pass the exam with just this course?
Yes. The course covers everything she should know to get a good pass in the GCSE exam.
Can I work with my son to help him catch up?
Yes. You should be able to ‘act as the teacher’ using the materials provided and help your child by discussing each step with them. There are assessment and level sheets to assess as you go.Â
Can I use this course instead of getting my child a weekly tutor which is much more expensive?
Yes. I will provide all the materials. I have been teaching English for over 35 years, so I know how to help students pass the GCSE and I am known for being THE teacher who gets the best results in the examinations. I have a lot more experience in getting students a good result than most tutors, so I will be able to use my expertise to boost their confidence and their performance.
Will students get support during the course?
Students can keep in touch with me by email. They will also hear from me in group Q&A sessions each week on a Wednesday evening at 8pm. They will be invited to a private group where they can share work and get support from other students and me.
Can I book extra one to one tutoring for my child?
Yes. There are some tutoring slots available at extra cost.Â
